The goal was to create an experience of colors and textures – on a limited budget. The concept revolved around the loft as ‘the ocean’ and constructed elements (kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom) as ‘the islands’.

The space of the loft reminds you of an ocean. The functions are, when necessary, enclosed in volumes floating on it. With no corridors and a minimum of partitions, there is only a vast space where three island-like volumes are planned: the bedrooms, the kitchen and the sanitary facilities.

Modern loft in Brussels

These three functional islands have all different textures and colors. The volumes are placed against the walls leaving a large open space next to the existing South-East face windows.

“Inspiration came from random but meaningful sources; an automated conveyor in steel – a pine structure – the color of Shin’s sweater.”

On the bedrooms volume, walls are finished with wooden materials, with bookshelves and closets on the sides. The children’s bedrooms are closed tightly for optimal acoustic requirements. The adult’s bedroom is closed by steel-framed sliding doors in order to take natural light from the workspace.

modern-loft-brussels-12

In the second volume, the walls of the kitchen and laundry room are in Matsuba-iro, a dull green color like the leaves of a pine tree. In the kitchen, the central island is situated at the edge of the raised floor, allowing the family to use it as a bar from the dining room. The kitchen has been designed as an open element without doors or walls, showing the utensils arranged on sliding trays. All hardware has been carefully chosen to provide an industrial appearance, fine and simple.

modern-loft-brussels-10

Finally, the sanitary block includes a separated toilet, a technical room and a bathroom, all in Benihi-iro, a red scarlet tone. In an industrial building with no sound insulation, a rubber floor material of 16 mm was chosen to prevent the spread of noise between floors. The floors are raised only where necessary for sanitary and electrical installations.

Biscuit Factory Loft https://www.loftenberg.com/biscuit-factory-loft/ https://www.loftenberg.com/biscuit-factory-loft/#respond Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:27:12 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=9976 This loft is a great find: an area of 300 m², a huge skylight, the Eiffel girders, beams and wooden poles, exposed brick, and the icing on the loft, a freight elevator. Located in the heart of the historic center of Bagneux, France, this former biscuit factory may well have it all.

The ground floor comprises of a living room bathed in light under a glass roof and a high-end kitchen with center island, both enjoying the high ceilings.

The first floor is occupied by two spacious rooms with open views and a bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. The last level houses a large master suite.

The enhancement of old elements such as wood frame, metal elements and the hoist, give this place a unique and resolutely industrial atmosphere. biscuit factory loft-bagneux-00300 loft-bagneux-00400 loft-bagneux-00500 loft-bagneux-00600 loft-bagneux-00700 loft-bagneux-00800 loft-bagneux-00900 loft-bagneux-01000 loft-bagneux-01100 loft-bagneux-01200

Colorful Paris Loft https://www.loftenberg.com/colorful-paris-loft/ https://www.loftenberg.com/colorful-paris-loft/#respond Fri, 22 Jan 2016 17:49:49 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=9937 Vivid colours, bold text, vibrant graphics – this Colorful Paris Loft at Rue des Filles du Calvaire delivers a daring visual punch. Huge windows signal the space’s origins as a water mill, but in its latest incarnation it’s part home, part art installation: daring canvases in confident colour propel the property into the future. Antique shelves full of books and journals section off a cosy sitting area and a study space. And in the corner of the open-plan room, wine glasses as light bulbs illuminate the chrome kitchen.

Abstract vision

The owners, a painter and a financier, share a keen eye for detail. This loft is one of several in the French capital the Parisian duo have renovated and re-designed. When they aren’t here enjoying the vibrant area, they escape to their country house just outside Paris.

Art and ambience

Rue des Filles du Calvaire is in the heart of the Marais, Paris’ historic Jewish quarter. Cultural and cosmopolitan, the 3rd arrondissement is a maze of cobbled streets alive with cafes, restaurants, boutiques, galleries and museums. And the atmosphere has infused this arty home – eccentric colours and ultramodern décor mean you could easily mistake the living space for an avante garde boutique. If you find time to sleep, there’s a well-equipped bathroom and welcoming bedroom in this Colorful Paris Loft.

Wrigley Building – Unit 315 https://www.loftenberg.com/wrigley-loft-unit-315/ https://www.loftenberg.com/wrigley-loft-unit-315/#respond Tue, 19 Jan 2016 09:08:02 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=9912 Unit 315 is a residential project created by the Canadian builder Dennis Dorion and his wife Dorion Scott. … Read more]]> Unit 315 is a residential project created by the Canadian builder Dennis Dorion and his wife Dorion Scott. The project is located in the Wrigley Building – a former chewing gum factory in Toronto, Canada, which was converted into apartments during the late 1990s.

Unit-315-Loft-Toronto-02

The interior of the apartment is contemporary and rich in details, integrating artistic elements with industrial ones. The predominant color on the walls and ceiling is white and a dark reflective floor offers contrast along with the dark tones of the side walls that are painted black.

Unit-315-Loft-Toronto-05

The overall neutral tones create a very elegant ambiance with long white curtains adding privacy and large windows allowing a good view of the surroundings. The lounge area is separated from the kitchen through a large island and the second floor is accessed through a spiraling staircase that also acts as a sculptural element in the living area. Another interesting characteristic of this space is that there is a separate room for the motorcycle so that it also becomes a part of the ambiance.

Unit-315-Loft-Toronto-03

The Wrigley Lofts are the real deal. This is the type of place you picture when you think of a hard loft. No cookie-cutters here. There are multiple lofts in this former factory – each unit is unique with different finishes and layouts – from the floors to the lighting. The first owners got the space from the developer about as raw as possible so each person put their own stamp on their unit. Because the ceilings are so extraordinary, many units have a mezzanine level and some even have direct freight-elevator access. Like in the movies. Except you are the hero.

Suites feature original industrial windows, 14-foot ceilings, original concrete mushroom-style columns and the exposed pipes and duct work that one would expect in a true hard loft conversion. One of the best things about this building is the uniqueness of individual suites. Original purchasers of this building bought raw space from the developer for about $100/square foot, and each owner made these blank canvasses their own – consequently no two suites in the building are alike.

Chapel on the Hill – a wonderful chapel conversion https://www.loftenberg.com/chapel-conversion-on-the-hill/ https://www.loftenberg.com/chapel-conversion-on-the-hill/#respond Sun, 10 Jan 2016 11:19:27 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=9811 Set in the very best walking area of the beautiful North Pennines, just a short walk from the famous High Force Waterfall, this stunning chapel conversion with its historic building fabric and modern interior design is a real Teesdale jewel.

Chapel-on-the-hill-conversion-2

The original windows of the nineteenth century building have been reopened, framing dramatic views of the dales to create a spacious and luxurious self-catering holiday cottage for seven guests. It has a large and fully equipped kitchen, a cosy living room, four comfortable bedrooms, two en-suits and a luxurious family bathroom. The reconstruction, designed by Evolution Design, has just recently been finished.

Chapel-on-the-hill-conversion-22

Historic features need to be preserved in a chapel conversion

As the existing building was in a poor state of disrepair and had been vacant for many years, the aim of the reconstruction project was to bring this unique property back to life and to enable visitors to appreciate the history and local architecture while providing a beautiful environment to explore the surround countryside and its vast range of activities.
At the time of acquisition, the property had sustained considerable water ingress due to its state of dereliction and not being maintained. Due to its exposed location, strong winds and driving rain, most of the interior finishes had been damaged badly, besides the main roof had deteriorated badly and the roof rafters required replacement.

Chapel-on-the-hill-conversion-7

Before any scheme or design had been drafted, the first tasks were instructing preliminary repairs for the damaged roof and board the windows and doors to prevent any further water damage. Once this had been completed the project team evaluated the available space to establish the type and quantity of facilities that would suit best the size and location of the Chapel.

Chapel-on-the-hill-conversion-20

New mezzanine floor

The insertion of a new mezzanine floor allowed for planning of three bedrooms upstairs and the kitchen / dining area, the living room, the bathroom and the fourth bedroom on the ground floor. Our approach was to provide solutions that answered the brief, but did not alter the historic details or essence of the Chapel. The main hall was the core element that gives the Chapel its feel of space and with its detailed simplicity it became the heart of the proposed design.

Chapel-on-the-hill-conversion-23

Complement the character of the building

Modern, stylish and yet in the context of the location and its history – these were the main criteria for designing the interior of the new holiday cottage. We wanted to create a space that was modern and yet had a traditional language that would complement the historic nature of the Chapel and appeal to a wide range of guests. This was reflected in our choice of furniture and finishes. All materials and design had been considered in the context of the character and appearance of the existing building and the Teesdale vernacular. Traditional materials were proposed to ensure the scheme respects the character of the landscape and the existing buildings.

Chapel-on-the-hill-conversion-8

As the heart of any home the kitchen and dining space was intended to be open and bright, taking advantage of the Gothic windows and the beautiful views of the surround landscape. The aim was to keep a traditional feel by retaining the roof trusses with a natural finish. The kitchen units were styled to keep a homely rural feel, which is framed by the feature wall tiles. By using traditional tiles to cover the full height of the back wall complemented the generous ceiling height and feeling of space.

Modern and comfortable holiday cottage

Being located in the very heart of the Upper Teesdale, the Chapel is a perfect location for unforgettable holidays spent walking, cycling, climbing, fishing or just relaxing with a book and a glass of wine in front of the log burner. Set high on the rolling hills, the Chapel offers peace and quiet, yet Middleton-in-Teesdale with shops, restaurants and pubs is just a few minutes drive away.

If you want, you can rent this chapel for the weekend at AirBnB
