Back across the living space, you’ll find the kitchen, which has transparent navy-blue cabinets. Behind the curved wall to the left of the dining area is a bathroom and pair of bedrooms, decorated with peppy colours. Down the hall you’ll find a bedroom with lofted bed, a double bedroom and another bathroom.

All rooms show off bohemian character, the master bedroom is big and bold, with oversized photographs; you’ll find the kitchen, which has transparent navy-blue cabinets. Using simple color combinations made each space work as magic that created a spacious feel. The design of this Bohemian New York Loft is very eclectic and a lot of attention was taken for every detail when designing, to expose all details at every corner.

It was in the 1960s that artists began flocking to a neighborhood south of Houston Street, drawn by the abandoned manufacturing lofts with high ceilings, abundant natural light and most importantly, cheap rent. As the bohemian set refashioned these wrecks into live-and-work spaces, they dramatically transformed the neighborhood too.

Today’s Soho is just as irresistible to creative types – albeit the polar opposite of the starving artist variety. The neighborhood’s historic cast-iron buildings now hold some of the most jaw-dropping price tags in the country, and it shows in the company they keep.

Design stalwarts Prada and Chanel rub elegant shoulders with a few choice art galleries, a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant and an Apple store.

A casual Saturday brunch at Balthazar typically includes a side of runway model or two. A stroll down the cobblestone streets may come with a celebrity encounter, complete with paparazzi in hot pursuit.

Yet there are still pockets of Soho that retain that old edge, and there’s always something to discover at every turn: a corner pub that has been serving up tipples since 1847, a tiny bakery that churns out pastries with cult followings or a club filled with beautiful people that’s concealed underneath a taqueria.

Heather spent all of her spare time in the weeks after moving in getting to know her new city and discovering the challenges of procurement in a foreign country, combing London’s vintage markets and interiors stores for the perfect pieces to complement the flat. With a mix of personal items, vintage finds, and eclectic eBay purchases, Heather has managed to highlight the open plan living space as well as create a sense of security and charm, something that is often sacrificed to ideals of minimalism in such spaces.

The central living space makes you feel tall and proud. The room’s low pieces (that alluring green sofa, Danish lounge chairs, and paintings and signs that sit on the floor) and layered rugs add so much texture, while the vast windows of the warehouse building fill the room with light and energy from all directions. It’s an invigorating space to spend time in, and it’s perfectly balanced by the comforts of the downstairs guest bedroom and bathroom and the mezzanine level master bedroom and en suite.

While there is a distinct lack of doors on the upper level, some clever roller blinds have been used to shield from view a wardrobe here, a bathroom there. Every room—every space—has eye-catching features that encourage conversation or raise a cheeky smile: a buffalo by the bath, horns above the bed, a naughty cross stitch, and a never-ending calendar won in a high school bet.

Having character is much more important than being perfect,

says Heather.

The large windows may present a challenge to the privacy-conscious, but there are blinds that shield the bedroom and frosted panes in the bathroom. Besides, the building is well-located in an area mostly used for office space and isn’t overlooked by large numbers of neighboring apartments. This means this eclectic London loft has the added bonus of being centrally located but also quiet during nights and weekends—ideal city life. Heather admits that the kitchen, while elegant and functional, is the least-used thing in the whole flat, but when the local neighborhood has such amazing food and drink, that’s easy to forgive.

The renovation of this two-bedroom, 4,500 square-foot second-floor loft included the preservation of original details like 14-foot-plus ceiling heights and Corinthian-style columns as well as the sprawling open spaces that make lofts so lovely.

Unexpected modern features are many: A 12-foot-tall glass-enclosed lounge borders the living and dining area.

Abstract vision

The owners, a painter and a financier, share a keen eye for detail. This loft is one of several in the French capital the Parisian duo have renovated and re-designed. When they aren’t here enjoying the vibrant area, they escape to their country house just outside Paris.

Art and ambience

Rue des Filles du Calvaire is in the heart of the Marais, Paris’ historic Jewish quarter. Cultural and cosmopolitan, the 3rd arrondissement is a maze of cobbled streets alive with cafes, restaurants, boutiques, galleries and museums. And the atmosphere has infused this arty home – eccentric colours and ultramodern décor mean you could easily mistake the living space for an avante garde boutique. If you find time to sleep, there’s a well-equipped bathroom and welcoming bedroom in this Colorful Paris Loft.

A great old library serves as a partition between the office and second living room that also serves as guest bedroom since the sofa is convertible.

Channing Tatum’s Loft boasts open-steel stairs, the original pine beams and the building’s original mechanical hoist, which you can spot pictured above. It was originally used as a live/work space, with the office on the bottom two floors, but the ground floor is now being marketed as potential retail.

The steel and pine open staircase connects all four floors of living space. Throughout, there are oak floors, exposed oak beams, and lots of exposed brick.

Despite all the space, there are only two bedrooms: A guest bedroom, with its own marble shower and bath, is on the first floor, and the master bedroom is above. The master bedroom, bathroom and dressing area/closet take up the entire third floor. The bed is separated by a floor-to-ceiling steel and glass sliding door.

The kitchen and dining room take up the entire fourth floor–this townhouse requires a lot of stair schlepping. The listing calls the kitchen “nothing short of perfection.” Fancy appliances include a Viking commercial range, a SubZero refrigerator, and a Miele dishwasher. It’s outfitted with black stained poplar cabinets and black marble countertops. The living room, which features the original mechanical hoist, is located right above on the fifth floor.

Keep on climbin’, this time up a circular staircase, and you’ll finally reach the townhouse’s private terrace. From the lush planted roof deck you’ve got views of New York City to the east, south and west. The listing calls it a “dream home,” and it’s certainly a place worthy of a dreamboat like Channing Tatum. Is his company included with that $6.5 million price tag, too? In that case, we’ll take it.

Also, it’s not only filled with really interesting, eclectic furniture, but it also retains many original church features (stained-glass windows, peaked windows, choir balcony) as well as some quirky additions.

This home retains the church’s original stained glass windows and full-height ceilings, but brand new parquet floors with under floor heating was installed. The kitchen has New York and Corian Concrete work surfaces.

Originally designed by Juan Carlos Quintana, a London-based fashion designer who combines Latin American flare with haut couture. He learned his trade from two Spanish masters who had formerly worked for the house of Balenciaga in Spain. When he launched his fashion label Quintana in London he needed a place to work and live. He found the solution in an unlikely place – a former canning factory in Shoreditch, on the southbank of the Thames River.

Before moving into his super-sized loft he had lived in a modest one-room apartment or bedsit in Chelsy. The difference could hardly be any greater – before, a small, cramped space, now a huge, two-storey loft in an erstwhile canning factory in London’s East End. Juan Carlos and Chris, a screenwriter friend, initially had to overcome a few difficulties in adapting. “We felt as if we were sleeping in a park or football field, ” says Chris, who felt lost in the vastness of the neo-Gothic building.

Shoreditch Loft

Juan Carlos, who comes from Guatemala, arrived in London in 2002, working first as a freelance fashion designer for Matthew Williamson, Jenny Packham and Michiko Koshino. As he had already had more than ten years of experience as a fashion designer in South and Latin America he finally plucked up the courage to head for Europe and set up his own label Quintana, which proved very successful when he held his first show in Paris in 2008.

Creativity at work generally translates in a kind of genius on every level of life. Clever ideas come quickly to Juan Carlos and his friend in their private sphere as well. For instance the problem of feeling lost in their loft was solved simply by setting up a protective tent in which the fashion designer and the screenwriter slept for their first year in the loft. It also had the advantage of lessening the pressure they felt to turn the former factory into a home from one day to the next. They took their time converting the industrial space and it paid off.

Initiators Floris Koch and Kassandra Schreuder: ‘We want to create a feeling like someone actually lives in The Loft. Someone with a strong taste and a good sense of aesthetics – which, moreover, a busy social life cherishes.

The ‘resident’ The Loft organizes its habitat throughout the month meetings cozy living room concerts and movie nights, lectures on various subjects for his intimates. On 18 July the housewarming.

Playing for The Circle is a logical sequel to The Loft where they have for years been intensively involved; creating spaces where people feel at home, be inspired and their imaginations free reign. “Many people who come to our meetings or to organize a workshop, ask for our interiors. They are curious about our furniture and wonder where we get our accessories come from. ” In recent years, that kind of talk all kinds of interior design projects rolled for several companies; from corporates to advertising agencies and even some yoga studios. “It seemed like fun now one of our areas to focus on an experience where people can take a bit of inspiration to take home.”

All properties in The Loft are carefully curated. Kassandra Schreuder: ‘We have a passion for design that withstands the test of time, but there its traces can leave. That is also because we love natural materials – such as wood, leather, glass, steel, wool and ceramics.

Floris Koch: “We love designs that provoke curiosity. Products that you want to touch. Which you want to know the story. What kind of wood the author used and where does it come from? We also find it important that the ancient crafts of glass blowers, tanners, blacksmiths and weavers continue to exist and new life is breathed. ”      

The Arts District loft is home, workshop and office in one, the latter function has been gradually formed out of the dining room table and its surroundings. Every item in the loft was part of the owners’ former’s homes – salvaged objects, antiques.

Kristan and Scott have a great eye for style, even their business idea supposedly came from guests often trying to buy an item or two….

A strong industrial element is evident through the exposed metal pipework and extractor tubing, a stripped back heating system against a background of raw concrete and unplastered brickwork. Distressed surfaces on which vintage and modern objects exist harmoniously contrast with an unexpected country island kitchen which adds a touch of homeliness. The warm rich hues of the wooden ceiling and the elegant chandeliers contribute a strong note of elegance to the equation.

The bedroom with its low bed and freestanding bathtub face a wonderful view of the city, adding to the tremendous urban energy of this very different residence!
