Dutch architect Laura Alvarez transformed a dark, dingy, two-storey apartment in Amsterdam into this bright, light-infused loft space we’d die for. Charged with getting “rid of the dark, claustrophobic feel of the old apartment and introduce a bright loft atmosphere,” Alvarez got to work, which involved gutting the space, removing existing walls and redefining this home as a whole. The resulting space features an open-concept, 70m2 main-floor footprint with a central “floating” staircase that is as much appreciated for its practical purposes as for its sleek style, leading up to the private bedroom level. Here, two bedrooms separated by a central ensuite offer a sweet retreat from the living and entertaining areas below.

The loft’s chic, minimalist aesthetic is made to soothe the soul while still satisfying the most demanding style cravings.

Converted School

The eclectic interior design totally makes sense once you consider the history behind the building it was once a charming late Victorian school, and has since been restored to the fresh and unique interior you see here. This apartment occupies the top floor, once a gymnasium. As soon as you see this loft, you notice the significant role the light plays, the respect for space and the pieces with character thatÂ seem to beÂ obligatory in order to get the generally ideal atmosphere. The first impression is that of a comfortable environment, a warm and welcoming air in a white space.

This authentic home belongs to Barbara Aurell,Â designer at Espacio en Blanco (White Space), the concept of whiteness being sustained by her own house.Â It isÂ situated in the neighborhood of Garcia de Barcelona and its main objective was that of taking advantage of the 70 m2 space on two heights and, at the same time, ofÂ the natural space offered by the entrance window. The 20 m2 yard givesÂ clarity, the space offering a harmonious line from the entrance to the living area and creating a pleasant atmosphere that makes you feel at ease.

The general air is that of an industrial loft with white walls, but without loosing the character of home. The interior provides an intelligent combination of vintage and modern decorative objects that reveal the personality of the owner (the sofa, the chaise longue are only a few details that contribute to the general character.)

The light definitely occupies an important place, offeringÂ a distinctive ambient (both the natural light and the light offered by the lamps).The whiteness of the walls makes everything seem more spacious, while the shades of red and the contrast with black add a tone of personality to the house.

If a mix of contemporary design and mid century-modern interiors is your thing, you will love this handsome loft by Poteet Architects. Rich and warm with a luxurious but comfortable atmosphere, this space is well laid out with wonderfully high ceilings. The exposed beams and ventilation add a little industrial flair, which is a nice combination with the style of the place. A small upper level adds a lot of interest to the structure of the loft and choosing glass panels for the railing allows an uninterrupted flow of light from that large window into the entire space.
