Schubert’s “garage” is breathtaking. Beautiful. Exquisite. But where are the tools, the work benches, the girlie calendars? Schubert concedes that it isn’t a typical, oil-on-the-floor garage, and he’s comfortable with that. “I wanted to create a backdrop for the car as a piece of art,” he says.

“I like very pure, minimalistic, empty space,” the German-born Schubert says. Think polished concrete, lots of glass and halogen lighting. “I like to be in a space where things line up and nothing stands out.”

It’s not just a Ferrari though: Schubert used to have a Maserati in there too, if only for a few photo shots.

One wall is covered in Homasote, a special type of recycled paper-fiber board, with a single-tier bookshelf built in. Two walls are floor-to-ceiling glass with retractable exterior shades to cut down on the afternoon sunlight. Overhead, the central skylight is artfully bisected with an aluminum enclosure for halogen lights.

To avoid exhaust fumes when the car is started, Schubert built a hydraulic ramp into the floor. The ramp tilts up about six inches at the front, enabling the car to roll back across the bridge and into the street before it’s started.

Further proof that the automobile role as machine has been abandoned in favor of its status as objet d’art: There are no wrenches, screwdrivers or battery boosters lying around – and Schubert will need them if the Ferrari remains true to form. Such a garage is consistent with the fact that modern cars are largely inaccessible to the tinkering, shade-tree mechanic. Most people never open the hoods of their cars. Instead, this garage has a lovely modular couch, two Dodo recliners by Toshiyuki Kita, a metal and stone coffee table and a flat-screen TV on tracks that can traverse the length of the room. “People in L.A. care so much about their cars and then the cars wind up stuck out in garages,” says Schubert, whose garage truly brings the car into the living space.

There has always been good reason to separate cars from living space. Cars are kind of stinky and oily. In modern cars, the passive reeking of gas and oil has largely been overcome by strict clean-air requirements that limit out-gassing. Soon, emission-free electric cars will “really open up the design of houses,” says Schubert, so that people will be able to drive directly into the home. It would make unloading groceries easier. Schubert looks forward owning an electric car, and his garage is pre-wired for a high-capacity charger and has 49 solar panels on the roof. But the electric car will have to sleep elsewhere. The Ferrari, he says, “has found its permanent home.”

Located in a former garage in a Bordeaux industrial district, this house was fully refurbished and divided into two main areas: a public one for interaction with visitors and a private living space. The first comprises a kitchen, cellar and guest room. The owners’ private space contains a large lounge lined with bookcases and an inner courtyard. The indoor swimming pool links the gym to the bathroom, which in turn leads to the bedroom through a dressing room. A space with a snooker table on the upper floor overlooks the lounge.

This fantastic live-in garage is the proof that passion can shape the spaces we live in. Designed for a young man whose Maserati was the object of his passion, this surprising garage/residence can be found in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Composed of layers of translucent and transparent separators, this residential space imagined by architect Brunete Fraccaroli is where the owner connects with his passion and surrounding nature. Spreading over 120 square meters, the modern garage is intended to link the owner and his car in the most visible way – the Maserati occupies an important space right in the living room. This versatile space includes the social area, a dining space, and office corner, a home theater and even a washing place. Meeting in-between dark walls and white ceilings, the carefully chosen furniture items compose an up-to-date design perfectly adapted for this special residential project.

The garage turned residence is located in a city in northern Italy, named Cuneo and bares the name Casa LD. Distributed on two floors connected by a sculptural staircase, the public and private spaces are linked through design and color palette. A bright, elegant downstairs living/dining/cooking area seems to be separated by a wide column pierced by a transparent fireplace, but the fluid spaces appear strongly connected. Wooden floors reflect in the wodden ceiling, displaying the same longitudinal design that seems to elongate rays of natural light coming through glass doors and windows. Ego Vitamina Creativa imagined a living space where design lines intertwine to shape a dark wooden piece of furniture running alongside the wall opposite the kitchen. This versatile construction acts as a storage space and supports the folded, painted and perforated metal staircase railing leading to the upstairs bedroom.

This unique feature completes the apartment’s design and the floor plan proves that careful space arrangement also needs a focal point to create an interesting interior design.

Talk about transformation : across the freight train line in the bad part of town an old garage has a new lease on life. Abandoned and derelict it now houses a studio and living space as well as an open courtyard. This rough and ready building is now being used as a home and workspace. The two stone structures surround a glass pavilon within a wooded landscape. The concept for the house was to create three distinct structures: one for the most public programs (entry space, garage, guest bedroom), one for the most private living and a third one where these two meet. Each structures have an outdoor terrace or some other connection to the outside, while the glass pavilon creates the feeling of being outside while inside the house.

The entire residence was designed by David Jameson Architect using wood and other natural materials that last at least a hundred years.

Great use of colour, materials, textures and style.
Def a home I’d live in, despite clearly being a circa “00’s” build!
It’s called “Nagari”, I wonder what that means…?Fingal is down the Victorian Mornington Penninsula,
close to Portsea, Sorrento, all those new golfing properties!

OK, I’m not a fan of that bath tub in that bathroom,
just not working for me at all. It was probably
a personal desire of the owner, with meaning to it – fair nuf.
But if I bought this home, that would HAVE to go!

Beautiful views, lifestyle down the peninsula,
