Contemporary materials typically thought of as cold and uninviting were transformed through various fabrication processes into sumptuous and unexpected textures and forms. Steel shelving and panels, finished with a dark patina that resembled old worn leather, join with ethereal satin glass walls to define space, provide storage and filter light.

In many cases, materials normally associated with exterior surfaces were reimagined in interior applications. Split face stone, concrete flooring, teak decking, and stucco walls all bring a tremendous amount of texture and warmth to an otherwise very minimal space. Each space was meticulously detailed to have its own defined style, while still relating to the overall design sensibility of the loft. The result is a fluid and flexible home that feels both open yet cozy.

The furnishings are so perfect: they have clean lines and an almost retro-feel, but they also have great, soft upholstery choices that are a variety of neutral colors. In fact we really love the sophisticated layers of neutral colors that show up in the palette: you see creamy beige and warm creams and light whites all mingling together, but then you see some darker natural wood tones for contrast. I basically just want to read a lot of books or nap or snuggle dogs all over this entire apartment.

Marseille Mill https://www.loftenberg.com/marseille-mill/ https://www.loftenberg.com/marseille-mill/#comments Wed, 25 Jan 2012 19:53:35 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=5741 In the words of Antoine Lavoisier,

Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything changes .

This is the maxim Mitri Hourani has endorsed, both in his work and in this interior. Hanging lamps, tapestries galore, unmistakable marks of the owner of the house are omnipresent. The stylist, prototype designer and set designer of Lebanese origin, has opted to transform this former mill in the heart of Marseille as a true temple of recycling. Old objects, re-invented to give them a second life, is the goal set by himself since the beginning of his career and he has practiced it in his home that doubles as a workshop. Thus, the beauty and character of the old mill have been kept, but kitsch objects provide a touch of modern and vintage. The entrance is a large bay window , and therefore the only source of natural light. The designer offset the lack of light by a large number of lamps and fixtures of his own. In the salon, located in the heart of the old mill, a composition of suspended shades bring color in the room.

A Persian rug dresses the ground with warm oriental notes while a Parisian grid, usually used to protect trees has been reproduced in resin and gilded in gold hang on the wall. The rough stone of the walls and ceilings have been preserved to keep the authenticity of the mill. The interior combines original and quirky character house, antiques and Boboboom Mixplus creations. A place in his own image, in which it is realized and recognized.

Swedish Loft https://www.loftenberg.com/swedish-loft/ https://www.loftenberg.com/swedish-loft/#respond Mon, 12 Dec 2011 21:34:15 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=5489 At the top of an industrial building from 1901, this unique loft has a total space of 196 sqm. Dramatic lighting, double height and open space conveys a great ambience, complementing the gorgeous Stockholm outside.

The interior is typically Swedish: elegant and understated, with mid-century modern-inspired furniture.

This great brass lamp hamonizes so well with the round table below!

And you said you don’t like wires running all over: just look at this and you’ll see that they can very nicely fit into an interior if done well.

Separated where necessary but still wide-open space

Artistic Two-level Loft https://www.loftenberg.com/artistic-two-level-loft/ https://www.loftenberg.com/artistic-two-level-loft/#respond Sat, 12 Nov 2011 19:03:44 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?guid=4c64bb6a8e12c4f93e0331443aafd9a0 Cozyness and comfort don’t depend on any particular style. After all, we’re all unique. Unique is also the word to describe this beautiful loft located in Madrid, Spain. It’s a two-leveled loft that was designed by Fernando Tapia and Monica Andina. The interior is both artistic and casual.

Artistic two-leveled loft in Madrid

Even though the décor features the typical Spanish national coloring, there’s nothing typical about this loft. That’s not because it’s unusually striking in terms of furniture, colors or materials but because it’s a loft full of art. The designers managed to find a way to combine functionality with style without compromising one or the other. The result was this extremely functional apartment with a great sense of style.

The loft is divided into two volumes. The first part includes the living room, the kitchen and the dining room, in other words the public spaces of the apartment. The other volume houses the bedroom. As for the structure and the materials used, the loft features a combination of concrete and metal complimented by a colorful interior and vintage furniture.

The most interesting part is the artistic side of this loft. The walls are covered with portraits, pictures and all sorts of other decorations. They vary from playful to dramatic and they cover not just the walls but basically the whole loft.

Airy White Industrial Loft https://www.loftenberg.com/airy-white-industrial-loft/ https://www.loftenberg.com/airy-white-industrial-loft/#respond Sun, 30 Oct 2011 19:03:36 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?guid=30287ce6416e38c4f769cdbf21f13476 The airy white interior of the RPG Loft is a perfect reminder that warmth plays a critical role in a comfortable home – although industrial simplicity is what makes this space unique, the welcoming atmosphere just would not be the same without those delightful repetitions of warm wood, rough brick, and smooth stone.

By keeping the brick structure and the original sandstone tiles in some places, the owners felt they have kept that feel. As a counterweight they created a long, white wall of closets. The library shows the passion for photography of the owner. The use of stone in the bathroom, reaffirms the affinity with natural materials.

Major features like furniture, cabinetry, and even track lighting are arranged in a pleasant linear fashion that draws the eye without forcing it to settle. Carefully chosen points of contrast such as the unique geometric coffee table and vivid red couch grouping add functional visual interest – a subtle but important anchoring features considering the powerful flow of the other modern design elements.

Fantasy Island https://www.loftenberg.com/fantasy-island/ https://www.loftenberg.com/fantasy-island/#respond Sun, 03 Jul 2011 18:22:12 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=4233 Russian interior designers Michael Miroshkin and Elen Miroshkina from Geometrix Design have designed the new interior of this splendid apartment.

Located in Moscow, Russia, the 1,400 square foot apartment has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen that James Bond would be proud of with its sliding table/bar counter controlled by a remote!

We’ve set a goal to organize the light modern interior which combine convenience, aesthetic qualities and functionality of space.

Say the designers. The foundation of delivered tasks was chosen as far back to the planning stage. We’ve set up the direction, “the movement vector” which interlay the way logically through all the apartment’s zones, with the help of interesting wall architecture.

Through the entrance lobby we get into the large sitting-room, where with the help of extendable glass partitions the kitchen area is detached. This decision determines the prescription of every zone logically, but at the same time doesn’t overload the space and makes it unique, light and airy.

The main emphasis in the interior is focused on the home theater zone. This is not only the necessary part of the sitting-room but also the complete art-object. The switched off TV panel “ad notam” becomes the invisible part of big black glass panel with the all round embedded light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The construction arrests sight and its prescription astonishes. And in this case the idea aesthetics doesn’t pinch the functional purpose: we mean, the space for keeping CD and books on each side. Under the glass there is the commode with drawers, and all the construction continued straight to the ceiling in the form of lustrous panels with the built-in luminaires (lamps). The luminous decisions wide choice makes the interior change according to mood preferences.

Oil Mill Loft https://www.loftenberg.com/oil-mill-loft/ https://www.loftenberg.com/oil-mill-loft/#respond Mon, 06 Jun 2011 14:03:37 +0000 Located in Extramadura, a community of western Spain, this amazing building was first constructed by the Jerónimo monks in the 12th century and later became an oil mill. Due to its historic value, its original architecture was kept intact. In order to rehabilitate the building and transform it into a proper living space, the current owners transmitted their request to architect Ricardo Elizondo, who reinvented the space, after almost two decades of utter neglect.

Found on Nuevo Estilo, this fabulous crib characterized by austere lines and natural materials is bold and dramatic, making it a perfect home for lovers of genuine experiences. Colorful materials give the place an inviting touch, while iron and steel elements make an intriguing contrast with the old brick walls. Vintage furniture is aesthetically mixed with modern wooden items and paintings liven the heavy atmosphere.

NY West Village Residence https://www.loftenberg.com/ny-west-village-residence/ https://www.loftenberg.com/ny-west-village-residence/#respond Thu, 19 May 2011 19:18:56 +0000 Billinkoff Architecture had designed this bold, 5-story residence for a NY family. What makes this house especially interesting that it’s the second one the architects designed for the family – they knew their exact preferences and lifestyle, had the opportunity to learn from the first project.

The original five-story structure had been divided over time into small apartments. To achieve the high standard of finish, the entire interior structure and the rear wall of the building (remember, five stories..) was removed and rebuilt. The brownstone street elevation and some walls were saved. On the rear, a new aluminuum and glass facate adds to the contemporary character of the house and forms a perfect backdrop for the elegant garden.

The entire gleaming white interior is illuminated from the inside by a five-story atrium flaunting a contemporary purple-clad staircase, which casts sculptural shadows throughout the home in the evening. Billinkoff Architecture worked extensively with the owners to ensure the white design of this modern interior retains the character of a living, breathing family space with the integration of bold classic furniture. Playful prints on the sofas and rugs bring out the warmth of the dark wenge floors. Colorful, textural art and sculpture can be found around every corner, including pieces by Bettina Werner and Candida Hoffer.

This charming West Village brownstone is fresh and funky, far from ordinary, and truly worth a double-take!
