A fashionable exterior features rounded edges and smooth teak sides and deck outlined with shiny metal hardware and a classy splash of red on the underside. Generously sized rooms and modern details throughout, this is not your typical nautical experience.

The living space is on the main floor with a fireplace, many windows that let in lots of light, and fully functioning – and fully-sized – kitchen. Beautiful hard wood floors stream throughout. A metal staircase with glass banister contribute to the roomy feeling as well. Upstairs, the bedroom offers spectacular views with the all around windows and delightful upper deck with jacuzzi. The most surprising corner of this houseboat is the bathroom, unusually spacious for a houseboat, especially with the provided luxurious fixtures.

Designed as a house for two or a place for a weekend getaway, the boat floats on a steel pontoon and has all of the comforts any home would ever need.

The open metal staircase and upstairs glass bannister give the space a loft-like feeling

The boat is 1-1/2 floors, with the bottom one housing the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and closet while the upper part contains the enclosed bedroom. There is a deck right off the bedroom with a jacuzzi.

God’s Loft https://www.loftenberg.com/gods-loft/ https://www.loftenberg.com/gods-loft/#respond Wed, 07 Nov 2012 22:43:58 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=8678 Regular readers know I have a thing for church conversions – and today I have another one, in the Netherlands: God’s Loft

This former church in Haarlo, the Netherlands has been transformed into a unique loft. The starting point for the design were the retained (mostly with a need for restoration) qualities of the 1928 dating monument; the façade, the bell tower with clock, the volume, the iconic location on the outskirts of the village and nice details like the wooden roof construction, the old panel doors and arch windows with leaded glass.

This project demonstrates that a transformation of a church with limited resources is possible, when using a smart design and an efficient plan. The concept was; strip, isolate and furnish. The execution represents the motto of the owners: “Cherish your inner child; remain pure, playing, exploring and a little bit naughty!”

It was a conscious choice, not to fill the volume of 1100 m3 completely with as many rooms as possible, but to minimize the demands, in order to retain the spaciousness of the building. The only architectural additions are the mezzanine for the relaxation room (couch, bed and bath) and the multifunctional “stairway to have fun” (stairs, room divider, closet, kitchen, acoustic element and exhibition wall).

The used materials are pure, sober, functional and budgetary; concrete on the floor, the original wooden floorboards from the church as cladding for the “stairway to have fun”, stainless steel kitchen elements, a hard glass partition to retain openness, white stucco for making the space light inside and strategically chosen red accents.

This project shows great passion, humor, respect, love and creativity. This is being reflected in the, specially for this project realized, elements like the swing “swinging sister”, the “KROONluchter” (inspired by the original organ), the “gate of heaven” flanked by a wall of guardian angels, the “stairway to have fun”, the “holy shit” on the toilet, birdhouses with lamp for strange birds that have seen the light and the wooden “lost sheep” in the garden.

The modern garden has large plastered planters, made by left-over-bricks. There is a herb garden, a vegetable garden, a flower garden and an orchard; a contemporary nod to the old monastery gardens. The outside shed with a porch is a 40ft container, integrated into the wooden fence and equipped with a green roof. By deepening the garden, a private garden is created yet still a view at the church is remained intact.

This project by LKSVDD Architects is an exemplary example of architectural transformation and sustainable conservation of religious heritage.

Treetop Loft in Atlanta https://www.loftenberg.com/treetop-loft-atlanta/ https://www.loftenberg.com/treetop-loft-atlanta/#respond Fri, 02 Nov 2012 08:45:42 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=8606 A step away from downtown Atlanta- Come relax under a canopy of giant trees and the sounds of the forest in this new modern treetop loft..

Architect designed and built- this steel structure is tucked into a group of mature hardwood trees. High ceilings and big, clean spaces with tons of natural light.

Modern, radical, custom built lofts- way up in the trees-tall ceilings and big open floor plans make it a huge hotel room or as event space for small gatherings, meetings, retreats.

Clean, bright and beautiful, this building is made of steel, wood, glass and plaster- with no unhealthy adhesives or off gassing materials- for healthier air quality and to prevent mold growth.

Large windows, and giant doors open out onto a 200sq-foot deck surrounded by treetops. The huge balcony off the kitchen has two grilles- gas and charcoal- built into the guardrail.

The stainless kitchen is minimal- a gas cook top, a small oven, a small sink and a mini-fridge and toaster.

Do you like it? You can rent it at Airbnb, where I’ve found it.

Loft in Bordeaux https://www.loftenberg.com/loft-bordeaux/ https://www.loftenberg.com/loft-bordeaux/#respond Fri, 12 Oct 2012 18:30:26 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?guid=5378c9913e2d38e939f703b9dec3ed04 Creative modern loft in Bordeaux, designed by Teresa Sapey Estudio located in an industrial district.

Located in a former garage in a Bordeaux industrial district, this house was fully refurbished and divided into two main areas: a public one for interaction with visitors and a private living space. The first comprises a kitchen, cellar and guest room. The owners’ private space contains a large lounge lined with bookcases and an inner courtyard. The indoor swimming pool links the gym to the bathroom, which in turn leads to the bedroom through a dressing room. A space with a snooker table on the upper floor overlooks the lounge.

Living Large in this Loft https://www.loftenberg.com/living-large-loft/ https://www.loftenberg.com/living-large-loft/#respond Wed, 03 Oct 2012 20:01:58 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=8277 A loft large enough to ride your bike in sounds like the paragon of city living. Problem is: how do you actually live in over 4,000-square-feet of raw space? This was the challenge for New York-based photographer Alexander Deutsch when he bought a reconverted industrial loft space in lower Manhattan.

Deutsch felt strongly that the integrity of his new space depended on retaining the original industrial elements, so changing such things as exposed brick and wooden archways wasn’t an option. However, living without the option of privacy wasn’t acceptable, either.

“I wanted the flexibility to separate the loft into a series of rooms,” he explains. It was the space’s abundance of natural light that originally attracted him, so he wanted to make sure that when he divided it, each “room” would still have ready access to windows. To create the rooms, he chose to install movable walls—but not just any movable walls.

“I went through sliding glass to steel doors, but they were all too permanent and interfered with the ‘flow’,” Deutsch says. After more research and thought, he decided to utilize a Swiss K1 meshed-steel door from an overseas freighting company. When the door is “closed,” the master bedroom is separated from the kitchen and work area, delineating Deutsch’s personal space from his business space.

Deutsch devoted as much consideration to every other detail when he set about creating the sleek, modern, minimal look he desired. When styling his loft he looked to Blade Runner, which features Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Ennis-Brown House,” deliberately chosen by director Ridley Scott to give the film its timeless quality. “I looked for materials that had an industrial, almost sci-fi feel,” Deutsch says. The influence is evident, from the overall geometric layout to the steel mesh doors to the color palate: a mix of burnt orange and polished nickel, overlaid with warm, earthy tones.

He also wanted to avoid creating an environment that would be all form and no function. For Deutsch, “everything in the space has a specific function.” For instance, Deutsch installed a “commercial kitchen to end all culinary quarrels.”

Equally impressive is the professional pool table from New York City’s Blatt Billiards. The bathrooms and much of the furnishings, including the orange Italian sofa, were also custom-made. “Turns out it costs even more money to do minimal right,” jokes Deutsch.

One thing’s for sure: he got it right. Vast, yet intimate, conducive to both working and living, the space provides a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere sorely lacking in most 4,000-square-foot spaces.

Italian Loft of Contrasts https://www.loftenberg.com/italian-loft-contrasts/ https://www.loftenberg.com/italian-loft-contrasts/#respond Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:51:15 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=8225 Italian design has typically been known to have some of the cleanest lines and interesting interiors from thinking outside of the box in many ways. The Turin Loft by MG2 Architetture embodies all of this with some unexpected color combinations and an eclectic mixture of nature thrown in to the transition from the kitchen to the terrace.

Just a few steps from the historic center of Turin, near the river Dora, in a former industrial area, there is an old factory that produced CEAT tires in the last century. This Italian loft is characterized by large bright spaces that interact continuously on both views of, on the one hand and the other on the way to the communal garden through the large terrace which is accessed by large windows placed over the entire development of the living area and the master bedroom.

As you enter you are attracted by the green of the terrace that looks like an oasis of relaxation with 12 olive trees. The entrance introduces at once to a large relational space divided into three areas with a double opening that connects to the kitchen.

The entire project is played on contrasts: past / present, inside / outside, hard / soft, light / dark, natural / artificial.

Resins with a rough surface are opposed to the wood in a dialogue between texture and color. In contrast to the light the choice of colors of the dense interior materials and fixtures, custom-designed. The covers of some of the walls in black metal oxidation controlled turn into hard lines of furniture, desk and bookcases.

The conservation of the structure of the pillars and ceiling beams and exposed concrete structure of the building is the memory of the past. The wood chosen for some of the floors are cut and laid on design and appear as soft tissue.

Access to the sleeping area is through an enamel red corridor characterized by the irregular shape of the ceiling from which emerge assemblages recovered from ex neon signs. The sleeping area incorporates warm colors and dense in the rooms and bathrooms that as the entire apartment collect vintage items, art and contemporary design.

The terrace has three areas well divided and dedicated to the various guest activities such as conversation, dining and fitness with the addition, for the latter, a gym in a modern greenhouse made on commission, which also includes a Jacuzzi under the open sky.
