The project consists of several structures, each employing various parts of a Boeing 747-200 aircraft. Wing House is the main residence and uses both of the main wings as well as two stabilizers from the tail section in order to serve as a roof for the master bedroom. The client, a woman who co-owns a Mercedes car dealership, requested curvilinear/feminine shapes for the building. The progenitor of the buildingâ€s form was envisioned as a floating curved roof. It soon became apparent, that in fact, an airplane wing itself could work. In researching airplane wings and superimposing different airplane wing types on the site to scale, the wing of a 747, at over 2,500 sq. ft., became an ideal configuration to maximize the views and provide a self supporting roof with minimal additional structural support needed.

The 747 represented the single largest industrial achievement in modern history and its abandonment in the deserts make a statement about the obsolescence and ephemeral nature of our technology and our society. As a structure and engineering achievement, the aircraft encloses a lot of space using the least amount of materials in a very resourceful and efficient manner. The recycling of the 4.5 million parts of this “big aluminum can” is seen as an extreme example of sustainable reuse and appropriation. American consumers and industry throw away enough aluminum in a year to rebuild our entire airplane commercial fleet every three months.

The new home features plenty of environmental features, starting from using materials that are 100% post-consumer waste, to solar power, radiant heating and natural ventilation. How would you comment on this projectâ€s concept and design?

Located in a landmarked synagogue is this grand triplex apartment with unique spatial qualities. The building was converted into five residences in the 1980s. After purchasing the home, the lucky couple turned it into a modernistâ€s version of the green haven that it once was.

The new layout takes advantage of the impressive double-height space and the private penthouse terrace. A custom-designed stair provides fluidity and continuity of function and spatial quality.

Renovated and redesigned using some cool design elements and materials that have low impact on the planet, the new home sports a downstairs lounge, second-floor library and a third-floor bedroom.

The main bathroom was relocated to the third floor bedroom level, allowing the mezzanine to become a spacious library/ lounge. The exterior facade to the terrace was exchanged to a custom glass sliding system allowing space to flow smoothly from interior to exterior.

Serving as the exterior extension to the bedroom, the penthouse terrace was conceived as a weaving of horizontal surfaces while also keeping to the soft transition curves as mirrored in the bathroom fritted glass wall.

The level of transparency in the construction and the extensive use of glass to bring in the modern minimalist feel have meant that there is plenty of natural ventilation which does away with lighting needs for most parts of the day.

It is a live/work studio (the translucent part upstairs is the “live”).

Inside, light is baffled by a series of seamless white lacquered panels whose reflective qualities diffuse light.

These screens can be slid back or forth to hide or reveal the live/work spaces inside, while minutely controlling the light for the photographer.

The clarity of this simple, open spaces in the minimalist landscape is delicious. The double height space floods the live/work studio with diffused Northern light.

The effect of the clear transparent cube on the matte black facade of the granite plinth is almost lantern-like. But this is not just for good looks.

If exposed to the sun, the gigantic expanse of black granite can act as a huge thermal mass that soaks up the suns warmth during the day, and breathes it back out at night.

You might worry that solar gain could make this ice-maiden live/studio into a hothouse on a sunny day. But floor-to-ceiling sliding panes allow it to be completely open to natural ventilation. The roof outside is painted white with a special cool roof paint. This prevents excessive heat gain.

Because of the site – on a lake – a deep-water exchange is utilized to alternatively heat or cool the building year–round through radiant slabs in the floor.

Just one more way to build green.
