Subway in the sky https://www.loftenberg.com/subway-in-the-sky/ https://www.loftenberg.com/subway-in-the-sky/#comments Wed, 02 Feb 2011 23:48:25 +0000 https://www.loftenberg.com/?p=1782 Inspired by his love of New York City, architect Adam Kushner transformed this West Village apartment into a stunning space. Using nature’s 4 elements and overlooking the city he loves, the architect successfully integrates glass, wood, brick and stainless steel, with New York subway tiles and doors to create a most unique, modern yet rustic private retreat.

Salvaging pieces from the city’s subways, as well as cutting boards from local delis, Kushner was able to beautifully (and inexpensively) revamp this penthouse into a destination teeming with character. The project is not only impressive in its use of recycled materials, but has also been immaculately executed, becoming a source of inspiration.

Furthermore, the architect created a floor comprised of cast-off deli counter cutting boards. Salvaged wood and stainless steel are used throughout the space to echo the subway aesthetic.

This extraordinary space features a pebbled meditation pool (which also serves as a hot tub and shower) a den/guest room/office with skylight, and a master bedroom that floats above it all with edge light floors and curved white walls. You feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud

Many of the duplex walls are lined with recycled New York City Subway tiles. Guests enter the apartment through an old subway car door, which also adorn all of the closets in the house, adding a touch New York grit throughout the space. Kushner reportedly bought the Subway remnants for only $200!

Like any penthouse, luxury is not kept to a minimum. The upstairs features a sloping aerodynamic ceiling, and opens up to a retractable roof where a meditation pool and terrace await.

An ode to the great city of New York, and inflated real estate prices, all of this for just under $2 million through Sotheby’s Homes.
